Amdo in the Tibeto-Chinese borderlands is not - as
many believe - just the lamaseries of Kumbum, Labrang and some
minor monasteries far from the heartland of Tibetan culture. This
detailed survey of The Cultural Monuments of Tibet’s Outer
Provinces quickly reveals that Tibetan culture is neither extinct
in Tibet proper nor in the outer provinces of Amdo and Kham.
Their inhabitants’ accomplishments in rebuilding
monasteries, restructuring the economy and revitalizing the
traditional way of life are among the most fascinating recent
events in Asia. This work is an expression of the author’s
admiration and respect for what Tibetans have accomplished within
the last decades.
Until now, East Tibet has been poorly
researched, not to speak of comprehensively documented, and
presented. These two volumes are thus all the more valuable in
presenting for the first time in English information about this
enormous area that was previously unavailable. Areas being part
of what is called east Tibet, however, make up a major share of
the Tibetan high Plateau, accounting for some two thirds of its
huge area. It was thus urgent that a survey of Tibet’s
cultural monuments and specific features of historical monuments
of the eastern part of the Tibetan Plateau—with special
reference to its culture, history, tribal and ethnic variety—were
made available.
Andreas Gruschke has visited and
thoroughly documented-often for the first time-many of the
unknown sites in Amdo and Kham, among them highly active monastic
establishments with hundreds and even thousands of monks and
hidden treasures of Tibet's living and revitalized Buddhist
tradition. He presents a variety of historical, economic and
religio-philosophical aspects that in order to explain and
evaluate the differences and the common features within the
Tibetan cultural context, including detailed descriptions of the
current situation of the sites and, to a lesser extent, of the
society.
The wealth of materials has made it both
necessary and rewarding to publish several volumes dealing with
the historical monuments of east Tibet - with the first two
presenting the fascinating world of northeast Tibetans in Amdo:
vol. 1 on The Qinghai Part of Amdo and vol. 2 on The Gansu and
Sichuan Parts of Amdo.
The first
volume was just published in June 2001, the second
volume in October 2001. In Europe prices are 55,- Euro each

Gruschke
legt den ersten Band eines mehrteiligen Werkes über
historische und kulturelle Monumente von Ost-Tibet vor, also
die traditionellen Provinzen Amdo und Kham. Die Einteilung in
die einzelnen Regionen folgt teilweise der heutigen
administrativen Organisation Tibets in China [Aber: ist
eigentlich an historisch gewachsenen Regionen orientiert]. In
Amdo gibt es ca. 1000 Klöster, davon beschreibt Gruschke
in diesem Band ca. 60, außerdem zehn
nicht-buddhistische Bauwerke und Ausgrabungsstätten. Er
bettet seine Beschreibungen in ein reiches Wissen ein, das
sich aus den spärlichen westlichen Quellen (z. B.
Wilhelm Filchner) speist, insbesondere aber auf die Kenntnis
der tibetischen und chinesischen Quellen. Das Buch ist also
aktuell, aber mit seinem Format von 21 x 29,5 cm kein
handlicher Reiseführer. Es zeichnet sich durch seine
überaus klare Aufteilung und Gliederung aus. Dem
Textteil von 110 Seiten ist ein sehr informativer und voller
Sachhinweise steckender Anmerkungsteil beigegeben, der sich

1980
wurde Tibet erstmals im 20. Jahrhundert für den
Reiseverkehr geöffnet. Die Zeit davor war Tibet aus
mannigfachen Gründen ein verschlossenes Land. War es bis
ins 19. Jahrhundert vor allem die abgelegene Lage, die nur
vereinzelt Missionare, Gesandte oder Abenteurer bis ins Land
des Schnees vordringen ließ, gewannen später
politische Gründe an Gewicht. Das Machtstreben der
Russen, der Briten aber auch Chinas in Zentralasien ließ
Tibet zu einem Spielball der Weltpolitik werden, mit der
Folge, daß Tibets Führung allergisch auf jeden
Fremden innerhalb seiner Grenzen reagierte. Das blieb so bis
1950 als China seine Chance die Welt war mit anderen
Problemen beschäftigt - nutzte, das Dach der Welt
besetzte und die Grenzen hermetisch verschloß. Die
Literatur über Tibet ist ein Spiegel dieser Situation.
Wenn auch bis 1950 fast jeder, der dieses Land erreichte,
hierüber ein Buch veröffentlichte, blieb die
Literatur über Tibet spärlich, wenig zuverlässig
und oft durch ein vorgeprägtes mythisches Tibetbild
verfälscht. Das hat sich seit 1980 geändert. Wie
bei allen aktuellen Fernreisezielen ist die Literatur fast
unüberschaubar geworden. Neben vielen belanglosen und
immer wieder ähnlichen Veröffentlichungen
erschienen aber auch Bücher, die sich fundiert mit der
tibetischen Kunst und Kultur befassen, ... ... ...

Amdo
und Kham, die östlichen Provinzen des tibetischen
Kulturraums und Bestandteile der Provinzen Gansu, Qinghai und
Sichuan, wurden bis vor wenigen Jahren vernachlässigt,
wenn man im Westen über "Tibet" sprach. In
diesen Gebieten lebt jedoch etwa die Hälfte der
tibetischen Bevölkerung. Der Tibet-Tourismus
konzentrierte sich zunächst auf das Tsangpo Tal in der
Autonomen Region Tibet. Von Osttibet waren nur die zwei
grossen Klöster Kumbum und Labrang bekannt, die aber
fernab von der üblichen Route der Tibet-Reisenden lagen.
Infolgedessen wurden die Klöster Osttibets in vielen
Reiseführern nicht erwähnt.

I was a little
curious when I received your books, because I found them
pretty expensive, and was not quite sure, if they would show
up to be worth the money.
I
must say, they where.
This
are extremely beautiful and interesting books, a very
skillfull and qualified piece of work.
I
have been a Buddhist for 30 years. 3 years ago I visited
Tibet for the first time (I was in Bhutan 7 years ago)
invited by Kyabje Pema Kalzang Rinpoche, abbot of Dzogchen
Monastery in Derge, Kham. It was a wonderful experience, I
stayed for two months - half of the time together with my
family, wife and two kids.
I'm
looking forward to your book from Kham.

I began to read
your books yesterday and my wife took also great pleasure in
watching the nice photos which reminded her own native land,
Biru county, between Nagchu and Nangchen.
I
agree with your opinion about cultural and religious
situation in eastern Tibet, today. Through my actual
translation of Namtrul Rinpoche and Tare Lhamo's biography
which was written some years before by a Khenpo from Nyenlung
monastery (golok), I can see the wonderful renewal in Dokham
area, although it is too often said in western countries that
tibetan culture is "in its death-throes", as you
say.
That's
why I pay hommage to your work which emphasizes the vitality
of tibetan culture in its own country.

Ich
wollte Dich nur wissen lassen, dass wir Deine zwei Buecher zu
Amdo sehr gut finden. Es gibt eine Fuelle an spannenden
Informationen ueber die Geschichte der verschiedenen
Kloester. Auch die Auslegeordnung, was es an religioesen
Einrichtungen in Amdo ueberhaupt gibt, war laengstens
faellig. Alles in allem also wirklich ein wunderbarer Job,
Glueckwunsch!
Einzig
vermisst haben wir zusaetzlich zu den genauen Beschreibung im
Text, eine Karte zu jedem Kapitel, wo die verschiedenen
Kloester eingezeichnet und in einen kartographischen Kontext
gesetzt werden, so dass man auf Anhieb sieht, wie man wo
hingelangt und wie lange das etwa dauert. Aber vielleicht
laesst sich das ja in einer naechsten Auflage machen...

freuen uns auf jeden Fall jetzt schon auf Deine Kham-Baende.
Kannst Du mir Bescheid sagen, wann diese beziehbar sind?
